Why Monitor?

Why do I need to monitor my web site?

In one word, downtime. Downtime equals lost customers, lost customers equals lost sales, lost sales equals lost profits, lost profits equals.... well... we don't want to go there. So let's minimize the downtime to minimize lost profits. If your hosting provider or ISP is up 99% of the time, that means you are down 15 minutes every day. That is not very good uptime.

How do you know if your site is affected by hosting/ISP outages, server failures, or Internet "anomalies"? Do you think your hosting/ISP provider will tell you when your site is down because of a problem? Look at the chart below and see what uptime you can live with. How do you know you are meeting that number?

Percent Uptime Downtime for 1 day Downtime for 1 week Downtime for 1 month Downtime for 1 year
90% 2 hrs, 24 mins 16 hrs, 48 mins 3 days 36 days, 12 hrs
95% 1 hr, 12 mins 8 hrs, 24 mins 1 day, 12 hrs 18 days, 6 hrs
99% 14 mins, 24 secs 1 hr, 40 mins, 48 secs 7 hrs, 12 mins 3 days, 15 hrs, 36 mins
99.9% 1 min, 26.4 secs 10 mins, 4.8 secs 43 mins, 12 secs 8 hrs, 45 mins, 36 secs
99.99% 8.64 secs 1 min, 0.48 secs 4 mins, 19.2 secs 52 mins, 33.6 secs
99.999% 0.86 secs 6.05 secs 25.92 secs 5 mins, 15.36 secs

How do I know if I need to monitor my web site?

Answer this one question...

If your web site was down, would you want to be notified?

If you answered "Yes", then you need to have your site monitored.

How does Site Guardian work?

In a nutshell, Site Guardian acts like a browser monitoring your web site. It goes to your web site, requests your page and brings it back. As simple as it sounds, we do substantial testing of statistics and diagnostics on each request. Think about how you would personally monitor your site.

  1. Get a stopwatch.
  2. Bring up your browser.
  3. Enter the URL of the page you want to monitor and start the watch.
  4. When the page has finished downloading all the data, stop the watch.
  5. Log the time it took to get the page.
  6. Alert you if there were problems.
  7. Do it again, and again, and again, and again.
That is what all the "Internet Monitoring Services" do.

Why is Site Guardian different than other Internet monitoring services?
